ORLANDO -- Hundreds of people are spending the night underneath an Interstate 4 overpass to bring awareness to the issue of homelessness.
"I always looked at homelessness as someone who was irresponsible, someone who was alcoholic, that was a drug addict. I never thought it was for myself," said Darren Lane.
Lane, his wife, Kathryn, and three daughters found themselves homeless a year ago.
"To have all of that taken away and to face sleeping under a bridge, literally as the only option, is rather humbling," Lane said.
Lane said before being homeless, he had a successful real estate business and enjoyed the high life. But all of that came to a sudden stop.
Lane is just one of thousands facing this reality.
On Friday night, 500 people came out for the Orlando Union Rescue Mission's One Homeless Night, an event to raise awareness of this growing problem.
Among those participating was Brad Conway, the attorney for George and Cindy Anthony.
Conway told News 13 it was important to him, as well as the Anthonys, to take the time to support the rescue mission and each other.
"In these tough times, any one of us could end up homeless," Conway said.
