The holiday season is upon us and as we gather together with our families and friends in the comfort of our own homes, many people in our community won't be able to share those holiday traditions that we may seem to take for granted.
The homeless and working poor come from many backgrounds: some have lost their jobs, been evicted from their homes, have had excessive medical bills or may suffer from mental illness. Many homeless are military veterans that had served to protect our freedoms, but we have failed to honorably recognize their sacrifices.
The holidays this year may bring sorrow to many of these members of our community. But when there seems to be nowhere else to turn for help, they can always count on the Orlando Union Rescue Mission (OURM) to provide a hot meal, a friendly conversation and share a prayer of thankfulness and hope.
More than 1200 guests from the streets of Orlando will gather at the Rescue Mission's Great Thanksgiving Banquet on November 25. The traditional meals will include turkey, stuffing, cranberry sauce, dinner rolls, green bean casserole, mashed potatoes with gravy and home-made pies. OURM will also provide their Celebration of Hope Christmas Dinner on December 23.
Don Moody, executive director of OURM, said that “many times hope for a brighter future begins with a good, hot meal provided by someone demonstrating Christ-like love and compassion.”
In addition to the holiday meals, there are several programs available through-out the year at OURM.
