A New Chapter: Building Pathways of Hope and Stability

In the heart of Central Florida, where housing costs continue to rise and challenge even the most determined families, the Orlando Union Rescue Mission is preparing to launch a faith-centered transitional program that offers hope and opportunity. This new initiative, which will include 108 apartments ranging from efficiencies to three-bedroom units, aims to be a crucial bridge from structured shelter to independent living. “One of the significant conditions we have seen over the past couple of years, and it's attended the significant increase in the number of homeless people, is the inability of folks who are just getting on their feet and whose lives have become stable and productive to afford housing in the current market,” said the CEO of the Orlando Union Rescue Mission. “We have four guests at the mission right now who are ready to graduate from our program and live independently and self-sufficiently, but they cannot afford market rate rent.” Mission guests like Garisha, who currently resides at the Mission’s Family Home with her four children, represent those who stand to benefit the most. Despite working a stable job, Garisha cannot afford a suitable three-bedroom apartment under current market conditions. This program will enable her and others to transition from mission housing, making space for the nearly 180 individuals currently on the waiting list, desperate for shelter. The mission of this program is profound and deeply aligned with faith-based principles. "Our goal is twofold: to provide a transitional program for our guests as they graduate from our programs and move into the broader society as a whole, and to relieve some of the pressure on families out there who, because of the housing shortage, need the assistance of less expensive programs,” the CEO explained. By offering an environment that includes mandatory savings plans, addiction recovery support, and community involvement, the program reinforces habits that foster long-term success. "We’re not just offering a place to live; we’re providing an environment that ensures stability, productivity, and lifelong success,” said the CEO. This initiative represents the Mission’s commitment to serving the community, helping families move forward, and opening the door for others who need refuge.
