In 2024, the Orlando Union Rescue Mission launched the Academic Support Program to address a critical need: children at the Mission who have fallen behind in school due to challenging life circumstances. Recognizing this gap, the Mission created the program to provide tailored academic support, helping young learners catch up, stay in school, and ultimately break the cycle of homelessness. Through personalized guidance, collaboration with schools, and dedicated support, the program equips students with the tools and encouragement they need to thrive academically and personally. Jacqueline, The Mission’s Support Counselor, plays a key role in bridging the gap between students, their schools, and their families. “I work to identify each student’s specific needs by observing them in the homework room and collaborating with their teachers and parents,” she shared. “By tailoring our approach, we can address challenges like a third grader struggling with reading or a high schooler falling behind in algebra. It’s about giving every student the chance to grow.” One tool aiding this effort is the IXL Learning platform, which helps pinpoint students’ strengths and areas for improvement. “IXL provides detailed assessments that allow us to see exactly where a student needs support,” Jacqueline explained. “It’s a valuable resource, but we also rely heavily on insights from teachers and parents to guide our approach.” Jacqueline emphasizes that teamwork is essential, not just with students but also with their families and educators. “When teachers share their insights, we incorporate their recommendations, whether it’s focusing on sight words for younger kids or strategies for more complex subjects,” she explained. “This collaboration creates a roadmap for success.” The program’s impact extends beyond academics. Students are also learning discipline, kindness, and perseverance. “The homework room isn’t just a place to complete assignments—it’s where students build habits that will serve them for life,” Jacqueline said. Parents, too, are noticing the difference, with one mother sharing how the program has helped her daughter get ahead in school. With support from a broad spectrum of Mission partners, the program continues to evolve. “I’m so hopeful for these kids’ futures,” Jacqueline said. “This program is setting them up for lasting success, and it’s a blessing to be part of their journey.”
